At first I didn’t understand what was going on on twitter. Then I saw it
and thought people who were saying blue and black were joking. Apparently
the original dress is blue and black, but the filter she used made it look
like white and gold to some people. I think what I read was the people like
me seeing white and gold are less light sensitive or something. A lot of
little kids at the theater I do acting at got into an argument because
    someone showed them the dress

The real life dress is dark black and dark blue. The original *photo* of
the dress is actually a brownish and a light blue/navy blue color. The
reason we don’t see the colors of the photo as they really are is because
    of color constancy.

Take a look at this photo:
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/60/Grey_square_optical_illusion.PNG

Square A and Square B are the exact same color. This is also an example of
color constancy. Color constancy is basically your brain taking in the
context of what you see as well as the colors, and depending on the
context, can actually change what you see, even if you’re actually wrong.
Context in the gray square optical illusion would be the shadow, more
specifically the local contrast and soft edges of the shadow. Even if your
conscious brain knows the truth, your subconscious brain doesn’t care. It
does what it does. (And if you don’t believe me that those two squares are
the same color, go into a paint application and see for yourself.)

Essentially, your brain is taking the context of the photo of the dress and
thus is not seeing it exactly as it. The reason we are seeing it so
differently, mostly divided into two groups (White/gold, black/blue) is
because the context in which our subconscious brains judge color is *vague.*
The context isn’t clear, so the brain has to take a guess. And different
people’s brains will take different guesses, mostly divided into two main
    groups.

TL:DR: The real dress is black and blue. The photo is brown and light blue.
We see it differently than what the actual color is because of color
constancy. We see it so drastically different from one another because the
context in which color constancy works is vague, so our brains take a
guess, often different from each other. The end.

(There may also be other small factors, such as the screen you are viewing
it on, the angle, the lighting in the room, your cones and rods in your
eyes, and so on. But essentially this is it.)

I got home from work late, putzed about BLISSFULLY UNAWARE before getting
online, and then I opened Tumblr to like a thousand memes about this dress
and everyone was angry and I didn’t even see a picture of it till the next
morning! Also, I see white and gold. I don’t know. I’m just pissed.

“Why do you be better this year? I’ll be just as great as I’ve always been
dude.” Took the words right out of my mouth. Brilliant Buck
